Back to the Beach....results from the Tampico Open IV

Saturday was the beach day and a rare southern breaze greeted the jammers who showed up for the 1998 Tampico Open IV. Later in the afternoon the northern wind took over for a while but calmed down as the first team competed in the Random co-op division at Gitis Beach, Santa Cruz.

This year the tournaments favorite host, Skippy Jammer was out of action due to a devastating achilles heal tear. But, he did show his true form at Tampico's drumming up stories from past Tampico tourneys.

The first team was Mike E, Matt G and M. Buti. One of the moves of the day occured when Regalbuti threw a completely bind over the head throw 30 yards in the air at a wicked angle - Mike "Farmer" Esterbrook used an airbrush technique called 'nesting' to bring it to control and begin a lengthy brushing co-op. Matt Gauthier hit a huge Vacation in front of Skippy who had been designated 'chief heckler'.

Tam W., Paul K. and Danny E. followed with a fun routine featuring Danny's grunt and sweat style, Pauls cool turnovers and Tam's wind skills. This team was all about playing the wind and setting up your partner.

The final routine was a blast from the past as Kevin "buzzy" Roberts competed for the first time in probably 2 decades. He brought back some crusty beach moves which complemented the big combos sidekicks Danny Sullivan and Tommy L were pulling out. Danny went gonzo on a couple of TLs hi-Z spanker throws.

On Sunday the venue was moved to grass and the super bonus for Water Catch was changed to 'Grovel'. In order to earn your bonus points for a grovel a player must be clearly grovelling for the disc and either get dirt or grass stains on his body or clothes and a direct result of grovelling for the disc.

The first team to play was Tam and Mike. They had numerous highlights including Mike's scarecrow at 4:20 in the routine and Tam's big gitis.

The next team was Buti & Tommy. Tommy hit one beyondo combo which ended in a foot brush combo into a flying crash and burn Bad Attitude catch. Buti played very solid hitting consecutive combos and sealing like a freshly licked envelope. Congrats to Buti for his first victory since he won the FPA worlds in '83 with Joey and Chip.

rose and Danny Evans were up third and they played well. rose hit a nice skid combo to secure bonus points and Danny was in constant motion working the wind to a T.

Doug Korns and Tom Gleason were next and they completed their routine with very few errors at the 4 minute mark. This left 4 more minutes of just plain jamming and they took full advantage - letting their hair down and grovelling for bigger moves.

The final routine of the day was Greg Riley (without the afro) and Paul Klimmek. Greg Riley played out of his mind for the first 5 minutes, then he realized he still had 3 minutes left and settled into a more mellow flow until the seven minute mark when he "got his groove back" hitting even more big moves. Paul completed his signature flight-of-hand moves with some sick upside down brushing and an air gitis.
